The pilot was watched by 2.49 million viewers, while the finale was watched by 2.99 million viewers. The main characters of the first season include (from left to right): Mallory Dent, Eli 'Weevil' Navarro, Duncan Kane, Logan Echolls, and. Plays Veronica's father, a private investigator and former Balboa County Sheriff. Plays, Veronica's journalism teacher at Neptune High. Although she was given series regular billing, Poitier appeared in only four episodes, but was given credit for seven. Kristen Bell was chosen to play Veronica Mars from more than 500 women who auditioned for the role.
Bell felt that it was 'just luck' that Rob Thomas saw that 'I have some sass to me, and that's exactly what he wanted'. Bell thought that it was her cheerleader looks and an outsider's attitude that set her apart from the other women who auditioned.
Jason Dohring, who played Logan Echolls, originally auditioned for the role of Duncan Kane. Teddy Dunn originally auditioned for Logan, but ended up portraying Duncan Kane. Dohring felt that his audition for Duncan 'was a little dark', and he was told by the producers that it was 'not really right'. The producers asked Dohring to read for the role of Logan, which involved reading Duncan's lines.
Dohring acted one scene from the pilot, in which he shattered the headlights of a car with a crowbar. During the final auditions, Dohring read two times with Bell and met with the studio and the network. When reading with Bell, Dohring acted the whole scene as if he had raped her, and tried to give the character an evil and fun feel.
At the time of Dohring's audition for Logan, the character was only going to be a guest star in the pilot. Thomas described, who portrayed the murdered, as 'the biggest surprise of the year'.
When casting a series regular, he was able to see all the best actors in town, mainly because they all wanted to be a series regular. When casting Lilly Kane, who would only appear from time-to-time as 'the dead girl', Thomas did not receive the same standard of actors. Thomas said that he had 'never had a more cut and dry audition' than he did with Seyfried.
He said that she was 'about 100 times better than anyone else that we saw, she was just spectacular'. He continued by saying that she ended up being so good in the series that he used her three or four more times than he initially planned. Release Critical reception. Performance as the protagonist generated critical acclaim. Gave the season a Metascore—a weighted average based on the impressions of a select fifteen critical reviews—of 81, signifying 'universal acclaim'. James Poniewozik of labeled the series as one of the six best dramas on television.
He praised Bell as 'a captivating star,' and said that the series 'uses its pulp premise to dramatize a universal teen experience: that growing up means sleuthing out the mystery of who you really are.' Kay McFadden of called Veronica Mars an update to the 'classic California film noir'. She felt that Veronica Mars was the best new series on UPN, and that the title character was potentially 'this season's most interesting character creation'.
McFadden described the series as ' in its attitude, in its writing and in its class-consciousness.' James South of praised the 'crisp, clever writing', and noted the supporting characters were more than just plot devices. He commended Bell's portrayal of Veronica as 'simultaneously smart, vulnerable, tough and injured', and found the guest stars were well-utilized. South wrote the remaining cast was 'uniformly good', but gave Dohring a special mention for his acting. Of praised the first-season finale for being 'just the sort of satisfying capper you look for in a series that, week after week, keeps you asking questions'. Robert Abele of said that 'in this smart, engaging series about a former popular girl turned crime-solving high school outcast, the hard-boiled dialogue comes from its teen protagonist's mouth in a way that stabs any potential cutesiness in the heart with an ice pick.' Joy Press of saw the series as 'a sharp teen noir in the making', 'pulsing with promise'.
However, Press felt that the series paled somewhat compared to the television series. Filip Vukcevic of gave the season a positive review, particularly praising the amount of audience participation. However, the reviewer felt that several of the main characters were undeveloped, and that Daggs III and Dunn, as well as their respective characters, were 'boring'. Vukcevic wrote that while the ultimate resolution to the murder was satisfying, it was not 'world-shattering'. Awards The first season was nominated for seven awards, winning one.
In 2005, Veronica Mars received the for Television Programs of the Year, and was nominated for the for Choice TV Breakout Show, and the for Outstanding New Program of the Year. So they're calling this the new Buffy. That's one hell of a reputation to live up to. I love television, but am always wary of the Next Big Thing because it's rarely the Next Good Thing; like cinema, most of the best stuff doesn't penetrate the mainstream.
We all know that last year the coolest new show on the block was Lost - it was both popular and very well made - but it turns out that while everyone was busy fawning over the flashy new kid, they missed the quirky, cynical outsider standing in the corner with her hands in her pockets. She is, and once you get to know her the first thing you'll want to do is introduce her to all your friends. She's that cool. Veronica Mars is one damn fine television show. It's got quite a few excellent characters - namely the lead, played by the charming Kristen Bell - and some great edge-of-your-seat drama.
There are twists. There are turns. There are plenty of laughs. And best of all when it's over you don't feel like you've been gypped.
For my money the biggest problem with mystery shows (ala Lost) is that the mystery is constructed in such a way that when you reveal the secret, the show's done. This leads to episode after episode of cliffhangers and teasers, and while that can be fun for a while, sooner or later it begins to grate. The first season of Veronica Mars is self-contained. The pilot introduces the main mystery - a murder - and it's unraveled by the season's end.
To add some spice, you've also got a handful of smaller mysteries that relate to the big picture. However, they're not constructed so that if one is revealed, you can immediately follow the thread back to the big ball of yarn. When the year is done you're both fulfilled and excited to see where the characters will go next. And ultimately, that's what makes the show tick. The mystery is great, but even when that's out of the way you find that you're so attached to the characters you don't care if they're no longer putting together the pieces of a puzzle. The challenge for the showrunners then becomes coming up with more good mysteries for future seasons.
Given the strong writing found in this first year I'm confident that the series can keep the good stuff coming. I'd love to see this show deal with a series-wide arc. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that it's not a good idea to review a show like this and go over too many plot points. Hell, I'd say that even discussing the pilot will ruin a few shocking surprises that are best left to the actors to reveal. Even so, if you're a Mars newbie I'm sure you're curious: think Nancy Drew, having a bad day (or year), helps High School kids get out of trouble while trying to figure out who killed her best friend. While each episode follows a formula, a kid has a problem which Veronica helps solve, the overall flow of the season is kept in check because as Veronica solves small cases she also stumbles across pieces of the big puzzle.
What's more, it helps that the individual mysteries have a degree of originality to them. Something that really caught me off guard was how certain characters developed over the course of the season. The biggest surprise came in the form of Logan Echolls (played by the wonderfully wry Jason Dohring). When the show starts off you'll hate this kid. When he gets hurt, you smile. But somehow by the end of the season that initial impression will be turned upside down; you'll love the guy. If you weren't coming back for the mystery, you'd be coming back for Kristen Bell.
Her turn as the cynical, but ultimately nice, Veronica is great fun. Her interaction with her father, Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni), is as good as a father/daughter relationship can get. Having a main character that gets pissed off and who tosses witty remarks is a formula for kick-ass.
While I really liked this show, it's not the second-coming that some have made it out to be. Two things bothered me: one, some of the main characters are weak, and two, the ultimate resolution to the murder, while satisfying, isn't world-shattering.
While Veronica, her dad, and Logan are all great characters, some of the supporting cast pales in comparison. Veronica's best friend Wallace (Percy Daggs III) is a nice guy, but ultimately boring. Same with Duncan Kane (Teddy Dunn), her former boyfriend. Both guys get worked into the storyline, but it's not the characters themselves that keep you interested, it's what they contribute to the overall mystery. My second complaint, the resolution, isn't as much a complaint as it is something that could have been better. I liked the way everything played out, but I didn't get the Sixth Sense moment I was hoping for.
I wanted the season finale to blow my mind, instead all it got out of me was, 'Ah, I see. That's cool.'
For the show to warrant a perfect score, the finale needed to have me jumping up and down shouting, 'HOLY #&@$-ING $#!^.' As you dig into the show you realize that its pace increases exponentially; it's at its best near the end. As the finale approaches you are led to believe that the murderer could be any one of several different people - not any easy thing to pull off convincingly. What makes good TV is audience participation.
If you feel for a character or are puzzling out a mystery, you're involved. And when you're involved, you're having a good time. Veronica Mars is a very good time.

The title should describe your issue. Having 'SR not working' or 'I get this bug' for 100 issues, isn't really helpful. We will close issues if there isn't enough information. Sometimes the devs may seem like grunts and respond with short answers. This isn't (always) because the dev hates you, but because he's on mobile or busy fixing bugs.

The murder of high-school student Lilly Kane shook the seaside town of Neptune, California to the core. For once popular girl Veronica Mars, it meant the loss of her best friend and being ousted from the affluent crowd that she once thought were her friends. Her father, Sheriff Keith Mars, found himself voted out of his job after making some unpopular accusations about the murdered girl's family. In response, Keith opened his own private detective agency. Now, Veronica, with her sardonic wit and a few new friends, works as his assistant while also navigating life as a high school (and later college) student. After reading quite a few comments from people who thought this show is 'horrible,' I was really surprised with their reasons.
First of all, there are very few TV shows out there that are in every way true to life. Of course the situations aren't completely plausible! That's why we watch TV shows in the first place - we're entertained by things that we would not normally do or see. If I wanted to watch something 'realistic' I'd just tape myself and watch it at the end of the day. What's real in this show is that every character is complicated and has layers in their personality.
The bad guy isn't all bad, and the good guy isn't so great either. There's just this gray area - just the way people are. Then there's the complaint that Veronica Mars is 'too smart.'
And that's a bad thing because.? I'm sick of mindless shows that give away the ending in the first minute and/or have the same tired plots. If witty is not your thing, that is sad and someone needs a good dose of 'sense of humor.'

Maybe everything we watch on TV should be bland and predictable from now on? By the way, detective work is supposed to be logical - not flashy. When you want to look for someone, you'd automatically put a trace on things they own.
What did you expect would happen? Some kind of laser tracking thingy? The writing on this show is amazing, as are the actors and everything else. The artistic value is also incredible. If TV watchers can't appreciate that, then I really am worried about the population.
